MANALAPAN – Tim Stockel is the first to admit that he’s always had an entrepreneurial streak.
“I had a paper route at age 6 and have had a landscaping business in town for over 30 years, ever since I was a junior in high school,” said the 47-year-old lifelong Manalapan resident. “I was always industrious, always selling stuff, and always the hustler on the block. I just liked to produce something and make people happy.”
Little did he know that making people happy would soon become his stock-in-trade. On a whim in the early 2000s, he bought some pumpkin seeds at a local hardware store, planted them on a small section of the seven-acre property that housed his landscaping business, and was amazed by the results.
“They grew very successfully and my wife and young daughter had a blast in the pumpkin patch – we took pictures, gave pumpkins to friends, etc.,” he said.
The following year, he grew a larger patch and hosted a pumpkin-themed autumn party with friends and subsequently grew a corn maze and bought a hay wagon and tractor to be able to offer rides to attendees.
Happy Day Farm
This “New Jersey Grown” maze offers 10 acres and lots of games to entertain the whole family in Manalapan, NJ.
Happy Day Farm
Remember that movie Signs, where crop circles start popping up everywhere, and Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix are brothers (hahaha), and then aliens invade, but then everyone finds out like 20mins later that you can kill them with water? Well Jerseywood is like that, except minus Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix and aliens (phew), and plus way, way cooler crop circles
An homage to NJ’s own Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Frank Sinatra, and Joe Pesci, Jerseywood’s an epic, 10-acre corn maze that lets you walk through the Rushmore-esque mugs of all four dudes, or even sprint, if you were Born to Run. Twelve bucks gets you all-day access to two maze entrances, the first of which is pretty easy and the second of which’ll take you 90-ish minutes, with helpful hints on which turns to take provided if you can 1) answer a series of text message trivia, and 2) figure out how to text message on your hot pink Razr
And if that doesn’t get you excited (it does, but keep reading anyway), the maze-owning farm’ll also have pig races, plus let you play with a pumpkin blaster and a corn cannon — or at least, until M. Nightfall.
